Things to consider when planning your visit to the Big Island

We recommend that you focus your Big Island time in Volcano with short trips in all directions and one around-the-island day to see Kona. The only reason to stay in Kona is if you ONLY want to sit on the beach or by the pool; which, by the way, is BETTER on any of the other islands as they are older and have much bigger more extensive beaches and more mature coral reefs.

Most frequent planning comments by guests staying at Volcano Inn:

1. We wish we had stayed more than one night.

2. Why did we stay one night in Hilo and one in Volcano when Hilo is only a 30 minute drive from Volcano?

3. Why did we fall for the one week deal in Kona when everything we wanted to do was a 5 hour drive to the other side of the Big Island?

4. Why are we double paying to stay in Volcano while we have our time share/condo in Kona?

5. Why didn't somebody tell us Kona was a rocky desert and green lush Hawaii was the east side of Big Island?

6. Why did we land in Kona and drive 2&1/2 hours when Hilo Airport is 30 minutes to Volcano?

Volcano is centrally located to explore the east side of the Big Island which has more things to see and do than the west side of the Big Island.

30 minutes drive South of us towards South Point are black sand beaches and sea turtles at Punalu'u .

45 minutes drive South of us towards South Point is the green sand beach area.

Most guests realize once they are here that it is nicer to stay in Volcano rather than in Hilo since Hilo is only 30 minutes drive away.

45 minutes drive North of us towards Hilo is Onomea bay.

45 minutes drive East are the warm ponds in Kopoho and the Lava Tree state park.

You can not come from Kona to visit Volcano in one day and return easily, but it is easier to see Kona in a day from Volcano.

The best diving and snorkeling beaches are on the other islands, Oahu, Kauai and Maui.

Kona is about 2.5 to 3 hours drive from us.

It is possible to drive around the Big Island back to where you started in about 8-10 hours depending on your stops. We are one mile from the Hawaii Volcano park entrance at the 4000 ft level.

Here are some other things to check out from Volcano (within a 30-40 minute drive)
